If you'd like to learn more about the Parish Book Store, you are invited to read the article below, which is reprinted from our quarterly newsletter, In the Spirit (August, 2000). Along with the many spiritual resources offered by St. Ignatius parish is a resource of a more cerebral naturethe parish Book Store. Religious books play a special part in the life of a Catholic, as our pastor, Fr. Charles Gagan, explains:
Located "backstage" in the church, and entered to the left of the newly-renovated DelSanto Chapel of the Blessed Virgin, the Book Store is a tranquil oasis for the book shopper, and provides a comprehensive range of titles. In addition to bibles and devotional books, the Book Store offers books on Christian spirituality, church history, contemporary Catholic thought, business ethics, aging, illness, death, marriage, parenting and divorce. A fine selection of "Ignatiana" is offered biographies of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Spiritual Exercises, and several works on Ignatian spiritualityalong with books by or about such well-known figures as Mother Teresa, Thomas Merton, Martin Luther King, Pedro Arrupe and Ronald Knox. A large collection of religious books for children is featured, ranging from solemnity to pure funan example of the latter being "Where's Jesus?," a picture book inspired by the popular "Where's Waldo?" books. A few religious items, such as rosaries, are also offered along with postcards and note cards featuring St. Ignatius Church. And don't miss the St. Ignatius Cook Book, put together by a group of parishioners a few years ago. Formerly known as the "Book Nook," the Book Store was established about 10 years ago. From the outset, the Book Store has been a favorite project of Fr. Gagan, an unabashed bibliophile. The Book Store is currently managed by Shirley Sachs, a USF alumna who also manages the book store at Vallambrosa, the Archdiocese's retreat house in Menlo Park. Book titles are selected by Fr. Gagan and Ms. Sachs and they welcome your suggestions. Future plans for the Book Store include a seating area for readers and an increased selection of religious items. The Book Store operates on a non-profit basis, with prices reflecting only cost plus sales tax. Purchases may be made by cash or check. The Store is open before and after regular Sunday Masses and the Saturday 5:00 pm Mass. Its "salespeople" are volunteers drawn from the parish community who typically serve once per month. One such volunteer, parishioner Greg Fox, began serving out of an interest in helping the parish and in encouraging parishioners, especially children, to read. Greg observed, "People should know that the Book Store is a place to bring your children." If you haven't visited the Book Store yet, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Even if you're not in a buying mood, just come in and browse. You never know what you might find. To help out in the Book Store or if you have some ideas for reading material, contact Fr. Gagan by e-mail at cgagan@usfca.edu or by phone at 422-2188. |
